20th Century Marten Bultman Descendants

HISTORY:

The story begins in Hattem, Holland where Marten Bultman, son of Jan and Jannigje Bultman married Anna Maria Van Der Zwaan. Marten, at age 39 left his wife and 5 children and travelled to America arriving on 4 March 1910. This is from the records at Ellis Island.On 25 August 1913, Anna and her five children arrived on the Holland-America liner Noordam, in steerage, with her five children. They traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin where Marten had made a home for them. However, it was only 6 years later that Marten succumbed from silicosis after working at the Nash Motor Car factory in Kenosha. According to family legend, it was Mr. Nash who paid for Marten's funeral and brought groceries to the family home which had now grown with 3 more mouths to feed.

In 1922 the family decided to move to a warmer climate and headed for Southern California arriving in Los Angeles about the first of December, 1922. With the help of the local Christian Reformed Church, friends from Holland and others, the family established itself permanently in Los Angeles. Eventually all the girls and one son married and established families.

Now Marten and Anna's offspring has grown with children and grandchildren to more than 60 plus spouses. We're glad you came to visit and if you have any questions, feel free to email Richard Bultman.

Late News About Marten Bultman:
1 Oct 2001- In a conversation with my one of my cousins the other day, she related a story her mother told her. It seems that one of the reasons why Marten Bultman left Hattem was because his shop and home burned to the ground. Evidently he was a baker who early one morning went downstairs to the shop and "fluffed a sack of flour". In those days there was no electric lights and homes and businesses in rural areas were, for the most part lit by oil lamps. Evidently the flour sack ignited and Marten barely had time to get his wife and four children out of the house. In support of this, my father, Joe Martin Bultman had a burn scar on his left forearm about 8 inches by 4 inches. He never spoke of how it happened just that it happened while in Hattem as a child.

Further, in a book my father wrote in 1953 after a trip to Hattem with my mother, he indicated that "we went to the grocery store that his dad owned". It was still there and still owned then by the people Marten sold the store to. Evidently there must have been a bakery as part of the grocery store.
