History:
        The province of Gelderland, The Netherlands, about 1690 when Jan Lubberts & Trijntne Jansdr were born. They married on 27 Apr 1710 in Hattem. To our current knowledge this was the beginning of the Bultman family as we know it today. The family progressed through many generations until the late 1800's when three Bultman brothers, Gerrit, Marten and Dirk decided to leave Holland for the United States. Dirk, the oldest was born in 1865, then Marten in 1870 and finally Gerrit in 1885.

Marten arrived on 4 March 1910 on the S.S. Noordam from Hattem. He traveled alone perhaps to make arrangements for his brother's families and eventually his own. Marten's wife Anna, age 33 and children, Jan (John) age 11, Gerrit (Harry) age 9, Johan (Joe) age 8, Machtelop age 6, and Gertruida (Gertrude) age 4 arrived at Ellis Island on 25 August, 1913 on the S.S. Noordam. They moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin until Marten's death in November, 1919. In the meantime, 3 more girls were born, Margaret, Jennie and Betty. In 1922 they moved to Los Angeles.

Gerrit left Holland with his wife Aaltje and by way of Liverpool, boarded theLusitania and sailed to the U.S. arriving on May 13, 1910. From what I know at this point is that Gerrit also moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin. I'm awaiting additional information on Gerrit and his family. Dirk also arrived with his brother Gerrit on the Lusitania. He was accompanied by his two sons John and Louis and his daughter Elizabeth (Lizzy). It is presumed that they also moved to Wisconsin. It would appear that Marten was sent on ahead to make arrangements for the rest of his and his brother's families.

S. S. LUSITANIA
We now know that Dirk left Holland and came to America through Liverpool, England. He and his three children, came over on the Lusitania and arrived at May 13, 1910. They arrived under the name of BALTMAN instead of Bultman. The 3 children were recorded as Baltman as well. Marten arrived on 4 Mar 1910, about two months before. Now we know that Gerrit, his family, and Dirk and his family both traveled on the same ship arriving Ellis Island 13 May 1910.

We have just been fortunate to find a Bultman cousin, a grandson of Dirk through the Internet. The hope is that through John we can try to complete the circle of information on Dirk and Gerrit and their families.

10/13/01 The Bultman Photo Gallery is now open. Because of the pictures that posted, we have reason to believe that there were three brothers and two sisters of Gerrit, Marten and Dirk who remained in Holland with their mother. We know the names of two, one is Aart and the other is Jan. Jan supposedly moved to France and Aart is supposed to have died in 1931. It never ceases to amaze me how much new information becomes available each month. Generous thanks to Elaine for helping in this search.

10/1/01 We have also been in touch with a granddaughter of Gerrit Bultman who has provided a variety of useful information. Not the least of which is that there very well may be additional children, in particular, a brother, who did not leave Holland. In checking a book that Joe Bultman wrote after a trip to Holland in 1953 he writes that "after clearing customs I turned and immediately recognized my uncle". If it was his uncle then this would be another brother of Marten, Gerrit and Dirk. Unfortunately, dad never wrote his name in the book, but his wife was "Tante Bet", which I believe to be Aunt Betty. We'll keep looking.

According to the Gen Lias database and other information on the web, there may have been other children of Jan and Jannigje Bultman.

***Jan and Jannigje had at least 3 boys, Dirk, Marten and Gerrit. There is additional information provided by Bultman family members that indicates the possibility of at least one other brother, Jan, who suposedly eventually moved to France. Other indications point to two sisters who stayed in Holland and possibly died of pneumonia. No hard facts yet to support this, but the search continues.
